The master bedroom was bathed in a suffocating, amber gloom. Jessica sat on the edge of the unmade bed, her body trembling as she cradled her two-week-old daughter, Lily. Tears tracked through the dust and sweat on her face, dripping onto her faded t-shirt. Lily’s tiny cries filled the room, a fragile, desperate sound that seemed to echo off the cracked plaster walls. Jessica hummed a broken lullaby, her heart hammering against her ribs, praying for the crying to stop before he heard.

But it was already too late. The heavy oak door burst open, slamming against the drywall with a deafening crack. Ryan stood in the doorway, his silhouette towering and menacing against the hallway light. His eyes, usually a calm blue, were dark with a volatile, unpredictable rage. He didn't say a word as he stormed across the room, his heavy boots thudding against the hardwood floor.

"Please, Ryan, she’s just hungry," Jessica whispered, her voice cracking.

Before she could pull away, Ryan lunged forward. His fingers tangled violently into her dark hair, jerking her head backward with brutal force. Jessica let out a sharp whimper, her neck straining as she tried to keep her arms securely locked around her baby. He stared down at her, his face inches from hers, breathing heavily. For a second, she thought he might strike her. Instead, he released her with a cruel shove that sent her sliding back across the mattress.

Lily began to scream, terrified by the sudden movement. Ryan’s jaw clenched, his veins bulging against his neck. He inhaled deeply and screamed at the top of his lungs.

"QUIET!"

The sheer volume of his voice seemed to shake the very foundation of the house. Jessica cowered, pressing Lily tightly to her chest, staring up at her husband in absolute terror. The man she had married was gone, replaced by a monster she no longer recognized.
