Previously: When Chloe discovered her husband's deceased mother was actually alive, she didn't expect the revelation to shatter her marriage—or expose a thirty-year-old family lie.

The Shadow of the Past

As Mark stepped off the curb, determined to cross the street and face the ghost of his childhood, a black SUV with dark tinted windows screeched to a halt directly in front of him. The sudden hiss of brakes startled the nearby pedestrians. Mark froze in the middle of the crosswalk. Two tall men in dark, tailored suits stepped out of the vehicle, immediately blocking his path. One of them, a stern-faced man with a briefcase, looked at Mark and then turned his gaze toward Martha on the park bench.

"Mark Vance?" the man asked, his voice cutting through the urban din. "We need to speak with you and your mother immediately."

Chloe, hearing the commotion, spun around. Fear gripped her chest as she remembered Martha's terrifying warning about the dangerous people from his father's past. She ran back through the crowd, throwing herself between Mark and the strangers. "Leave him alone!" she cried, her voice trembling but fierce. "Whatever debt his father owed, it has nothing to do with him!"

The man with the briefcase looked surprised, then sighed, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture.

"Mrs. Vance, please calm down," the lawyer said gently. "We aren't here to hurt anyone. We are representatives of your late father's estate. We have been searching for Martha for weeks."

Mark stepped forward, his voice thick with emotion. "My mother died thirty years ago. What is this?"

Martha slowly stood up from the park bench and walked toward them, her steps frail but determined. The silver-haired woman looked at the lawyers, her face pale. "I told his father I would never return," she whispered. "Why are you doing this?"

The lawyer shook his head. "Because, Martha, the story your husband told you was a lie. There were no dangerous creditors. He fabricated the threats to force you away and keep custody of Mark."
