The Uninvited Guest

The reception hall of the Grand Plaza was bathed in a warm, amber glow, but the atmosphere inside was ice-cold. Corinne stood near the center of the room, her fingers tightly gripping the stem of a crystal champagne flute. She wore a striking emerald green satin dress that clung to her frame, her dark pixie haircut and matte red lipstick giving her an air of sharp, dangerous elegance. She looked like a queen who had returned to claim her stolen throne.

A few feet away stood her father, Anthony, looking distinguished but visibly shaken in his charcoal suit. Beside him was Bella, Corinne’s stepsister, dressed in a pristine white silk gown and clutching a bouquet of white tulips as if they were a shield. The entire room had gone silent, the whispers of the city's high society dying down as they realized a storm was brewing.

"You shouldn't be here, Corinne," Anthony muttered, his voice strained as he tried to maintain a facade of calm for the crowd. "This is Bella's night. Don't ruin this for her."

Corinne didn't blink. Her cold, unblinking stare remained fixed on her father, watching the sweat begin to bead on his forehead. Slowly, the corner of her mouth twitched upward into a bitter, disgusted snarl. She looked at Bella, whose delicate face was pale with panic. Bella knew exactly what Corinne was capable of, and she knew that the perfect life she had built on lies was suddenly on the verge of collapsing.

Anthony stepped forward, his anger finally boiling over. "Get out!" he yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the opulent hall. Bella let out a sharp gasp of horror, dropping a few tulips from her bouquet as the crowd murmured in shock. But Corinne remained completely still, raising her champagne glass in a silent, mocking toast.
