A Heartbreaking Lie

James had owned the neighborhood grocery store on 5th Street for over two decades, watching the city change around him. But some things never changed—the quiet struggles of the families who slipped through the cracks. For weeks, James had noticed a young, red-haired girl in a faded green dress standing near his storefront. She never begged, but her eyes lingered on the fresh produce with a quiet, desperate hunger. Her name was Emily.

One warm evening, as the golden sunset bathed the gritty streets, James decided he could no longer stand by. He packed a wooden crate with fresh bread, milk, apples, and canned goods. Stepping outside, he offered it to the young girl. Emily’s face lit up with pure joy.

"Thank you, sir,"
she whispered politely, before clutching the heavy crate and running down a dark, narrow alleyway.

Concerned for her safety, James followed her at a distance. He watched her navigate the damp, derelict back passage until she slipped into a crumbling, low-income apartment building. Peering through the cracked door frame of a cramped room, James’s heart shattered. Inside, an elderly woman named Margaret and three small children huddled on a single mattress under the harsh glow of a bare bulb.

Emily proudly set the crate down. The youngest child looked up in awe and asked,

"How did you get food?"
Emily smiled warmly, gently pushing the crate toward them.
"You guys eat first,"
she insisted. Margaret looked at her granddaughter with weary concern.
"And what about you?"
she asked. Without missing a beat, Emily lied,
"I already ate at school."
Standing in the dark corridor, tears streamed down James’s face as he whispered,
"That’s a lie."
