The landlord sneered, looking David up and down.

"They owe three thousand dollars in back rent. Unless you have that cash on you right now, get out of my way."

Without hesitating, David pulled out his checkbook. He wrote a check for the full amount, plus an extra thousand dollars for the upcoming month. He slapped it into the landlord's hand.

"Take this and leave. If I ever see you harassing this family again, I will call the police."

"I own the bistro down the street," David continued. "I need an assistant manager, and the position comes with a steady salary and a lovely two-bedroom apartment above the restaurant that is currently empty. The job is yours if you want it, Sarah."

Sarah gasped, covering her mouth as fresh tears of joy fell. She threw her arms around David, thanking him repeatedly. Lily stepped forward, a radiant smile on her face, and hugged David's arm. For the first time in months, the family felt safe, warm, and full of hope.
