The silence inside the house was the first thing that made David’s chest tighten. Usually, the afternoon hours in their modest suburban home were filled with the soft, comforting sounds of newborn life—the gentle hum of the baby swing, the quiet lullabies playing from the nursery, or the sweet, tired voice of his wife, Sarah. But today, as David stepped through the front door carrying a fresh batch of baby formula, the air felt heavy, cold, and utterly vacant.

"Sarah?" he called out, his voice echoing off the hallway walls. No response. He set the grocery bags on the kitchen counter, his heart beginning to beat with a frantic, irregular rhythm. He hurried up the stairs, each step feeling heavier than the last. When he pushed open the door to the nursery, the dim light of the afternoon filtered through the sheer curtains, casting long, somber shadows across the room.

There, lying peacefully on the plush white comforter of their crib, were his twin newborns, Lily and Leo.
