Previously: Thomas ordered a simple lunch, but a sickening crunch led to a shocking discovery: his wife's missing wedding ring was hidden inside his burger, exposing a devastating betrayal.

The Smirk of a Coward

"Who cooked this?" I demanded, my voice dangerously low. Amanda, her hands shaking, pointed toward the kitchen doors. "It was Kyle," she whispered. The name sent a chill down my spine. Kyle was the smooth-talking personal trainer Sarah had recently hired. I pushed past the counter, ignoring the cashiers' protests, and slammed open the double doors to the kitchen.

There stood Kyle, leaning against a prep table with a smug, mocking grin. He didn't look surprised at all. "Something wrong with your order, Tom?" he sneered, wiping his hands on a dirty towel. "I thought you'd appreciate a little extra flavor."

"Where is my wife, Kyle?" I asked, my fists clenching so hard my knuckles turned white.

Kyle laughed, a cold, empty sound. "Sarah is busy. In fact, she's been busy with me for a long time. She dropped her ring in my truck last night, and I thought it would be hilarious to see your face when you found it. You're just a pathetic grease monkey, Tom. She deserves a real man."

Before I could react, I heard a soft gasp from the manager's office at the back of the kitchen. I strode over and flung the door open. There was Sarah, clutching Kyle’s leather jacket, her face pale with terror. "Thomas!" she stammered, backing away. "It's not what it looks like! We were just... we were going to tell you."

Kyle walked in behind me, confidently putting his arm around Sarah. She didn't pull away. Instead, she looked at me with a cold, dismissive glare. "It's over, Thomas," she said. "Kyle and I are together. And since we're going to take half of everything you own in the divorce, you might as well get used to losing." They thought they had me cornered. They thought I was completely destroyed.
