Previously: When Ethan pulled a freezing wolf from a cracked ice sheet, he thought he was saving a single life—until the rest of the pack emerged from the freezing mist.

The Hunter's Shadow

Ethan braced himself for the end, his body too frozen and exhausted to run. The four wolves stopped just yards away, their breath rising like steam in the cold air. But instead of attacking, they watched in silence. The wet wolf Ethan had saved slowly rose, shook the icy water from his fur, and trotted toward the pack. The alpha wolf nudged him gently before the entire group turned and vanished into the thick evergreen forest. Ethan, trembling from adrenaline and cold, dragged himself back to his cabin, safe but deeply shaken.

The next morning, a violent knock at the door shattered the peace. Ethan opened it to find Silas, a wealthy and ruthless local rancher known for his hostility toward the wilderness. Silas stood on the porch holding a high-powered rifle, his eyes filled with malice. He claimed that a pack of wolves had killed two of his calves and he had tracked them directly to the edge of Ethan's property.

blockquote>"I’m going to wipe that pack out, Ethan," Silas sneered, patting his rifle. "And you’re not going to stop me. They’re pests, and they belong in the dirt."

Ethan’s heart sank. He knew exactly which pack Silas was hunting. Refusing to let the majestic animals be slaughtered, Ethan blocked the doorway. But Silas was a large, angry man; he shoved Ethan aside with the butt of his rifle and marched into the woods. Desperate to protect the wolf he had saved, Ethan pursued him into the deep snow. The tension escalated when they found the pack cornered in a snowy ravine. Silas raised his rifle, aiming directly at the rescued wolf. When Ethan tried to intervene, Silas struck him hard across the face, sending him sprawling into the snow, helpless as Silas aimed once more.
