A Cry in the Frozen Wilderness

The winter of that year had settled over the Montana wilderness like an iron shroud. Temperatures had plummeted far below zero, turning the vast lake near Wyatt’s remote cabin into a treacherous, shifting sheet of ice. Wyatt, a seasoned outdoorsman who preferred the quiet solitude of the forest to the noise of the city, was out checking his perimeter when an unusual sound broke the silence. It wasn't the wind, nor was it the cracking of the lake's frozen surface. It was a faint, desperate whimpering—a sound of pure terror.

Following the noise through the thick, rolling fog, Wyatt reached the edge of the lake. There, struggling in a dark hole of freezing water, was a massive grey wolf. The animal’s strength was nearly gone; its paws clawed frantically at the slippery ice, only to slide back into the dark depths. Wyatt knew the risks. A cornered predator was deadly, and the ice was dangerously thin. Yet, looking into the wolf’s desperate golden eyes, he couldn't walk away.

Throwing himself flat onto his stomach to distribute his weight, Wyatt crawled across the groaning ice. The frozen surface cracked beneath him, but he pressed on until he reached the edge. With a deep breath, he grabbed the wolf’s wet, freezing paws.

"Come on, come on, you can do it!"
Wyatt roared, his voice echoing in the empty wilderness. He pulled with every ounce of strength in his body, his muscles screaming against the bitter cold. With one final, agonizing heave, he dragged the heavy animal out of the water, falling backward onto the solid ice.

As they both lay there, exhausted and shivering, a shadow fell over them. Wyatt looked up to see a terrifying sight: the rest of the wolf pack was emerging from the mist, their eyes locked onto him.
