The Warning on the Screen

The F train rattled violently along the tracks, its fluorescent lights flickering against the scratched glass of the windows. Chloe clutched the cold metal pole, her body swaying with the rhythm of the evening commute. It was a typical rainy Tuesday in New York City, and all she wanted was to return to her quiet Brooklyn brownstone, the house her parents had left her, and fall into the arms of her fiancé, Marcus. They were set to be married in three short months, and life felt almost perfect.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed with a sharp vibration. It was a motion alert from the security camera she had recently set up in her living room. Chloe frowned. Her cat, Leo, was at the vet for overnight monitoring, meaning the apartment should have been empty. Marcus had told her he was working late at his firm. With a growing sense of unease, she unlocked her screen and opened the security app.

The live feed loaded instantly, showing her warmly lit living room. But the couch wasn't empty. Marcus was sitting there, and next to him was Chloe's older sister, Maya. As Chloe watched in absolute disbelief, Maya leaned over and kissed Marcus deeply. Chloe felt the air leave her lungs. She quickly fumbled for her headphones, plugging them in just in time to hear their voices through the app's microphone.

"Are you sure she won't notice the extra papers tomorrow?" Maya asked, her voice laced with amusement.
"Chloe trusts me blindly," Marcus replied, holding up a legal document. "She’ll sign the pre-wedding paperwork without reading a single line. By tomorrow night, this deed will transfer the brownstone to us, and we can finally kick her out."

A cold sweat broke out over Chloe's skin. The train screeched to a halt at her station, and she stumbled out of the doors, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her mind raced with a mixture of grief and fury as she ran through the rain toward her home.
