The heavy oak doors of the Vance family chapel burst open with a deafening crash, shattering the somber silence of the funeral service. Standing in the doorway was Mia, the twenty-two-year-old estate maid, her bright yellow uniform a stark and jarring contrast to the sea of black mourning clothes. She was trembling, her hands gripped tightly around the handle of a heavy splitting axe. The mourners gasped, pulling back in terror as Mia marched down the center aisle toward the pristine white wooden coffin resting on velvet-draped stands.

The Desperate Act

Before anyone could stop her, Mia raised the axe and brought it down with all her strength onto the coffin lid. The wood splintered with a sickening crack. "Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, tears streaming down her pale face.

Arthur Vance, Emma’s fifty-nine-year-old uncle, rushed forward, his face contorted in a mixture of rage and panic. He grabbed Mia by the shoulders, trying to wrench the weapon from her hands.

"Have you lost your mind?!"
he yelled, his voice echoing off the stained-glass windows.

"I heard her! I heard her crying!" Mia tearfully pleaded, shaking him off. She pointed a trembling finger at the shattered hole in the coffin lid. The chapel fell into a suffocating silence as everyone held their breath. Then, from the dark depths of the casket, a faint, muffled female voice whispered,

"No... don't do this to me..."

Mia stood her ground, her voice cracking with emotion. "I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm." Arthur looked around in a sudden, wild panic, his eyes darting toward the exit as he asked,

"Did you hear that?"
Eleanor, Emma's grandmother, stepped forward. Her hand shook as she touched the splintered wood.
"My God... Emma?"
she gasped.
