I Thought My Wife Died Years Ago Until I Found Her Bleeding on the Battlefield
Previously: When Sergeant David Miller knelt beside a dying soldier in the desert ruins, he expected to see a stranger. Instead, he stared into the pale face of the wife he buried five years ago.
A Covert Ghost
The evacuation helicopter ride was a blur of rotor noise and panic. David refused to leave Clara's side, holding her cold hand as the medic pumped fluids into her failing body. When they finally touched down at the military hospital in Landstuhl, she was rushed straight into emergency surgery. David was left in the sterile, brightly lit waiting room, his mind spinning out of control. How could she be alive? Who was buried in that grave in Ohio?
Before he could find any answers, the heavy double doors of the waiting room swung open. Two men in crisp, civilian suits walked in, flanked by military police. They approached David with cold, calculated precision.

"Sergeant Miller," the taller man said, showing a badge that bore no agency name. "You need to come with us immediately. The soldier you brought in is a classified asset, and your security clearance does not cover her existence."
David stood up, towering over the agent.
"That is my wife," David growled, his fists clenching. "I don't care about your clearance. I want to know why she is alive, and why you took her from me."
The agent didn't flinch.
"Clara Miller died five years ago, Sergeant. The woman in that operating room is Agent Phoenix. If you speak her name or try to contact her again, you will be prosecuted for treason and spend the rest of your life in a military prison."
Just then, the surgeon stepped out of the operating room, looking exhausted but urgent. He glanced at the agents, then at David.
"She's stable, but she's waking up," the doctor announced. "And she's desperately calling for a man named David. I don't care about your politics, she needs him to stay calm."
David pushed past the agents, ignoring their threats, and bolted down the hallway toward the recovery room.
