Previously: Claire stood outside a Parisian bakery, remembering the son who was torn from her ten years ago. When she stepped inside, a miraculous encounter changed her life forever.

The brass bell above the door chimed softly, a cheerful sound that contrasted sharply with the heavy pounding of Claire’s heart. The interior of the bakery was warm and inviting, filled with the rich, comforting aroma of yeast, caramelized sugar, and fresh butter. An older man behind the counter smiled warmly at her, but Claire’s attention was instantly captured by a voice calling out from the back kitchen.

"The fresh batch of croissants is ready, Pierre!"

A young man stepped into the front shop, carrying a steaming metal tray. He had wavy dark hair, a strong build, and a dusting of flour on his apron. But when he looked up, Claire felt the ground vanish beneath her feet. It was Julian. He was twenty-four now, a grown man, but his eyes were the exact same shade of deep hazel she had dreamed of for a decade.

"Julian?" Claire whispered, her voice barely audible.

The young man froze. The tray in his hands tilted slightly before he set it down on the counter with a heavy clatter. He stared at her, his hazel eyes widening in shock. But instead of the joyful reunion Claire had envisioned, his expression quickly hardened into a mask of cold, defensive anger.

"What are you doing here?" Julian asked, his voice sharp and bitter. "You shouldn't have come."

"Julian, it's me," Claire sobbed, taking a step forward. "I've searched for you for ten years. Your father—"

"My father told me the truth," Julian interrupted, pulling a folded, yellowed piece of paper from his pocket and throwing it onto the counter. "He gave me this when I turned eighteen. Explain why you wrote this if you care so much."

Claire reached out with trembling fingers and opened the letter. It was written in a flawless imitation of her own handwriting, addressed to Julian, stating that she had started a new life in Europe and never wanted to see him again. Claire gasped, the sheer cruelty of her ex-husband's lie striking her like a physical blow.
