Previously: When a ruthless inmate cornered Rachel in the prison yard, demanding her worn-out sneakers, she refused to back down—unlocking a dangerous secret that would change her life forever.

A Deadly Conspiracy

Brenda finally released her grip with a harsh shove, leaving Rachel gasping for air against the fence. "You have until lockup," Brenda warned before walking away. Rachel stood there, her heart pounding, trying to make sense of the demand. Why would someone like Brenda, who had access to smuggled luxury goods and cash, care so much about a pair of ordinary, worn-out sneakers?

The answer came later that night. Feigning a headache, Rachel slipped out of her cell during the evening recreation hour. Near the dim shadows of the guard station, she heard muffled voices. Peering around the corner, she saw Brenda whispering with Officer Miller, a notoriously corrupt guard. Miller handed Brenda a small, tightly sealed plastic packet filled with a white substance.

"Make sure it's hidden deep in the sole of those white shoes," Miller muttered. "The transfer is tomorrow morning. If they search her at the courthouse, it’s on her, not us."

Rachel’s blood ran cold. They were going to use her shoes to smuggle high-grade contraband out of the facility. If she was caught with it during her scheduled court transfer the next day, she would face an automatic twenty-year sentence. Her pending appeal would be thrown out, and she would die in prison. But if she refused Brenda, she wouldn't survive the night.

The next morning, the tension in the yard was suffocating. As Rachel walked near the blind spot behind the gym, Brenda and two of her associates cornered her. Officer Miller stood at the end of the corridor, his back turned, deliberately ignoring the scene. Brenda drew a crude, sharpened metal shiv from her sleeve.

"Last chance, girl," Brenda sneered, raising the weapon. "Give up the shoes, or we take them off your corpse."
