Previously: When ruthless inmate Brenda cornered Clara in the prison yard demanding her sneakers, Clara refused to back down. But the reason behind Brenda's sudden desperation would change both of their lives forever.

The Desperate Truth Behind the Threat

The impact against the wire fence rattled Clara’s teeth, and the sharp metal links dug painfully into her shoulder blades. She could feel the vibration of the fence echoing all the way down the line, drawing the curious eyes of several nearby inmates. Yet, despite the terrifying display of physical dominance, Clara didn't panic. Instead, she looked closely at Brenda's face, searching for the anger that usually fueled the prison's most feared enforcer. What she saw instead shocked her to her core. Brenda’s chest was heaving, her knuckles were white, and her eyes were shiny with unshed tears. She didn't look like a ruthless bully; she looked like a mother staring into an abyss.

Clara took a deep breath, keeping her voice low so the guard in the watchtower wouldn't notice the altercation.

"Marcus paid you to do this, didn't he?"
she whispered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. Brenda froze, her grip on Clara's collar tightening for a fraction of a second before her expression crumbled. She didn't deny it. Instead, she hissed,
"Shut your mouth, girl. You don't know anything about my life."

"I know about your daughter, Brenda,"
Clara continued, pressing her advantage.
"I know she's sick, and I know Marcus promised to pay for her heart surgery if you got these shoes. But he is a liar. He framed me, his own wife, to save himself. Do you really think a man like that will keep his promise to an inmate? He will take the shoes, destroy the evidence, and leave your daughter to die."

A tear finally spilled over Brenda’s eyelashes, cutting a clean path through the dust on her cheek.

"I don't have a choice!"
she whispered hoarsely, her voice cracking with pure agony.
"His people told me that if I don't hand over the shoes by tonight, they will cut off her medical funding immediately. She won't survive the week without those treatments, Clara. I have to do this. I have to save my baby."

I have to do this. I have to save my baby."
