The Lobby That Smelled of Money and Grease

The Pendelton Robotics & Defense lobby gleamed like a temple to the future—titanium walls, terrazzo floors polished to a mirror shine, and a ceiling of soft LED strips that hummed with quiet power. At the center stood a brushed-gold pillar, a sleek monolith that pulsed with faint blue light, waiting for a hand that had never touched it in public.

Arthur Pendelton walked in with his son Toby, both of them looking like they'd wandered in from a construction site. Arthur's grey coveralls were smudged with oil and dust, his hands calloused and stained. Toby, six years old, clutched his father's hand and stared wide-eyed at the towering ceiling.

He had a red hoodie pulled over his sandy curls, and his sneakers squeaked on the marble floor. They were here for a reason, but to anyone watching, they were just a maintenance man and his kid, lost in the wrong building.

Victor, the branch executive, spotted them from across the lobby. He wore a double-breasted pinstripe suit that cost more than most people's rent, and his cold eyes narrowed as he approached. He didn't see a father and son. He saw a stain on his pristine floor.

"Beggars don't belong in here!" Victor snapped, his voice dripping with disgust. He pulled a wet towel from a nearby cart and threw it at Arthur's feet. The rag slapped against the marble with a wet thud, leaving a dark smear.

Arthur didn't move. He stood perfectly still, his jaw tight, shielding Toby behind his body. The boy's small fists clenched at his sides, but he stayed quiet, just like his father had taught him.

Victor curled his lip, enjoying the power he thought he had. "Did you hear me? I said get out. This isn't a playground for your brat."

But Toby stepped forward. He looked up at Victor with fierce, unblinking eyes, his voice shaking only slightly. "Stop insulting my dad now!"

Victor laughed, a cold, mocking sound that echoed through the lobby. He rolled his eyes and turned to the security guard nearby. "Get this kid a lollipop and show them the service exit."

Arthur placed a gentle hand on Toby's shoulder, then walked toward the gold pillar. Victor's smirk widened. "What are you doing? That's not a toy. Don't touch that—"

Arthur pressed his grease-stained palm onto the glass sensor pad. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then emerald lasers swept across his hand, scanning every ridge and line.

"Run the founder palm scan," Arthur said quietly.

Victor's laughter died in his throat. His face drained of color as the wall behind him exploded with light—a giant portrait of Arthur Pendelton, 100% Sole Founder, displayed in brilliant emerald.

"Biometric verified, Founder Pendelton," Commander Rocco said, snapping to a crisp salute.

Victor staggered backward, his mouth hanging open. He looked at the man in the grey coveralls, then at the portrait, then back again. "This... this isn't possible. You're the janitor."

Arthur turned to face him, his eyes cold and calm. He rested a hand on Toby's shoulder, and the boy smiled up at him with pride.

"Pack your desk right now," Arthur said.

Security officers moved in, stripping Victor of his keys and escorting him toward the exit. He was still stammering, still trying to process what had just happened, as the lobby doors closed behind him.

Toby looked up at his father. "Dad, did we win?"

Arthur knelt down and hugged him. "We're just getting started, son."
