A Kind Baker Saved a Starving Girl, Years Later She Saved His Bakery
Previously: When Arthur gave a starving little girl a free sandwich, he never expected anything in return. Decades later, as greedy developers try to tear down his bakery, a familiar face steps out of a luxury sedan.
The Predatory Trap
Julian Vance stared at the certified bank check Lily held out, his lip curling into a mocking sneer. Without warning, he snatched the paper from her fingers and ripped it in half, letting the pieces flutter onto the dirty pavement. Arthur gasped, clutching his chest in terror, but Lily didn't even flinch.
"You think you can just play the hero with a checkbook?"Vance laughed, tapping his watch.
"You’re five minutes too late, lady. It’s 5:05 PM. The contract Arthur signed clearly states that if the debt wasn't cleared by exactly five o'clock, the property deed automatically transfers to my development firm. The deal is done. The land is ours."

Arthur sank onto the bakery steps, his eyes hollow. "I tried to call your office all day, Mr. Vance," the old man whispered, his voice cracking. "Your secretary kept putting me on hold. I had the money from my community fund..."
"Business is business,"Vance snapped, waving his hand dismissively.
"Pack your flour and your memories, old man. You’re evicted."
But Lily was already moving. As a senior partner at one of the city's top corporate law firms, she knew exactly how vultures like Vance operated. She stepped forward and snatched the legal folder from Vance’s assistant's hands before anyone could stop her. Her eyes scanned the dense legalese with lightning speed, looking for the one crack in the armor.
Within seconds, she found it. Her lips curved into a cold, triumphant smile. She recognized the parent company listed on the contract—Vanguard Holdings. It was a shell company her own firm had been investigating for illegal predatory lending targeting elderly business owners.
"You made a critical error, Julian,"Lily said, her voice dripping with ice.
"And it's going to cost you a lot more than this bakery."
