The door flew open, and a man stepped out. Lily froze, her breath catching in her throat. It was Marcus. He looked exhausted, his clothes slightly rumpled, but there was no mistaking his face.

"Lily, thank God I found you!"

he cried, rushing toward her with open arms.

Lily instinctively stepped back, shielding her stomach.

"Get away from me, Marcus! You abandoned me! You left me to starve on the streets!"

she screamed, years of pain pouring out in a single breath. Marcus held up his hands, tears welling in his eyes.

"I didn't have a choice, Lily. I was framed for the embezzlement. If I hadn't run, I would be in prison right now. I've been searching for you everywhere."

Before Lily could process his words, a second car pulled up. David stepped out, having planned to meet Lily at the shelter. Seeing the confrontation, he immediately rushed to her side, putting himself between Lily and Marcus.

"Is this man bothering you, Lily?"

David asked, his voice protective. But when Marcus looked at David, both men froze. Their eyes locked, and the color drained from Marcus's face.

"David? What are you doing here?"
