My Late Husband's Wealthy Father Cut Us Off, Then I Found Him Stranded on a Deserted Road
Previously: When Sarah's husband passed, her wealthy father-in-law cut her off without a penny. Years later, a chance encounter on a deserted highway changes everything she thought she knew about him.
The Staged Breakdown
Sarah threw open her car door, her boots kicking up dust as she marched toward the two of them. Her hands were shaking, a volatile mixture of fear and deep-seated fury coursing through her veins. "Toby, get back in the car," she commanded, her voice sharp and trembling. Toby looked up, confused by his mother's sudden hostility, but he obeyed, leaving the wrench by the tire and scurrying back to their old sedan.
Once they were alone, Sarah turned on Arthur, her eyes flashing.
"How dare you show your face here? And how do you know my son's name?"she hissed, keeping her voice low but lethal.
"You left us with nothing. You threw us out like garbage after Mark died. Now you're standing on a highway playing the helpless victim?"

Arthur didn't flinch. Instead, the cold, arrogant billionaire she remembered seemed to melt away, leaving behind a tired, weathered old man. "I didn't stop here by accident, Sarah," Arthur said softly, reaching into his tailored jacket to pull out a thick, wax-sealed manila envelope. "I staged this breakdown. I knew you took this route every Friday. I had to see Toby with my own eyes. I had to know if he had his father's heart."
Sarah let out a bitter laugh. "You set up a game just to test a child? You are sick, Arthur," she said, turning to leave. But Arthur's next words stopped her dead in her tracks.
"Mark didn't die in an accident, Sarah. He was murdered because of the evidence he gathered against my former business partners. If I had kept you close, if I had given you my money, they would have targeted you and Toby next. I had to make the world believe I despised you. It was the only way to keep a target off your backs."
”It was the only way to keep a target off your backs."
