The air inside St. Jude’s Memorial Chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and cold wax. Chloe, the young maid for the wealthy Vance estate, stood at the back of the sanctuary, her hands gripping the rough wooden handle of a wood-splitting axe. She had snatched it from the chapel’s firewood pile in a moment of pure, desperate instinct. Her neat teal uniform and white apron felt like a costume in this arena of grief, but she couldn't let the horror proceed.

Up at the altar, the pristine white pine casket sat on wooden trestles. Inside was Emma Vance, Chloe's kind-hearted employer, who had supposedly died of sudden heart failure the previous night. But Chloe knew the truth. Just hours ago, while preparing Emma’s body, she had felt warmth in the young woman's hands. She had seen a faint, rhythmic pulse in her neck.

Unable to bear the silence any longer, Chloe sprinted down the aisle. "Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the stained-glass windows.

The mourners gasped. Thomas Vance, Emma’s husband, spun around, his face twisting with rage. "Have you lost your mind?!" he bellowed, stepping forward to block her path.

"I heard her! I heard her crying!" Chloe tearfully pleaded, raising the heavy axe.

Before Thomas could grab her, she swung the tool with all her might. The sharp blade bit into the white pine casket, splintering the lid with a deafening crack.

Silence fell over the chapel. Then, a faint, muffled female voice whispered from within the jagged fracture. "No... don't do this to me..."

Thomas’s face drained of color. He looked around in sudden panic. "Did you hear that?" he asked, his voice cracking. Beatrice, Emma’s elderly mother, stepped forward, her black lace dress rustling. She gently touched the fractured wood and gasped, "My God... Emma?"
