An Unthinkable Interruption

The air inside the private family chapel of the Vance estate was thick with the scent of lilies and cold stone. Gathered in their somber black attire, the wealthy family wept for Emma, the twenty-four-year-old heiress who had tragically succumbed to a sudden illness. Her father, Arthur, stood at the front, his head bowed in grief. But the solemn silence was shattered by the heavy wooden doors bursting open.

Mia, the family's young maid, stood in the doorway. She was trembling, her hands gripping a heavy wood-splitting axe. Her face was pale, and tears streamed down her cheeks. Before anyone could react, she marched down the aisle, raising the axe high above her head.

With a desperate scream, she brought the axe down on the pristine white coffin lid. Wood splintered and cracked. The mourners gasped and shrieked in horror. Mia raised the axe again, striking the wood with frantic strength.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Mia screamed desperately, her voice echoing off the stained-glass windows.

Arthur stepped forward, his face contorted in a mixture of rage and panic.

"Have you lost your mind?!" he yelled back, his voice booming through the chapel.
"I heard her! I heard her crying!" Mia tearfully pleaded, refusing to back away from the shattered coffin lid. "I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm!"

A heavy silence fell over the room as the initial shock subsided. Then, a faint, muffled female voice whispered from within the dark gap in the wood.

"No... don't do this to me..." the voice whimpered.

Arthur looked around in sudden panic. "Did you hear that?" he muttered. Eleanor, Emma's grandmother, stepped forward, her hand touching the splintered wood. She gasped, her eyes wide with disbelief. "My God... Emma?"
