Previously: When Julia asked her long-lost love Peter for a dance, his tragic refusal led to a shocking revelation that changed everything they knew about the past.

The Secret of the Burning Car

I knelt beside Peter’s wheelchair, ignoring the curious glances of the nearby guests. "I don't care about the dancing, Peter," I whispered, my voice thick with unshed tears. "I care about you. Why did you leave me five years ago? Why did you let me believe you stopped loving me?"

Before Peter could answer, a shadow fell over us. It was Arthur, a wealthy, arrogant businessman who had been trying to court me for months. He looked down at Peter with clear disdain.

"Julia, darling, why waste your night in the dark corner with the handicapped when you could be dancing with me?" Arthur sneered, his laugh drawing the attention of the surrounding tables.

Peter’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the armrests of his chair, his jaw clenched in silent humiliation. I stood up, my anger boiling over, but Peter gently caught my wrist. "Don't, Julia," he whispered. "He's right. You belong out there."

Suddenly, Peter’s younger brother, Marcus, pushed through the crowd. He looked absolutely furious.

"No, Peter! I am tired of watching you protect everyone else at the cost of your own happiness!" Marcus shouted. He turned to me, his eyes blazing. "Julia, he didn't lose his legs in a random accident. Five years ago, on the night he vanished, he was driving to your apartment to propose to you. He had the ring in his pocket."

My breath caught in my throat. Marcus continued, his voice shaking with emotion.

"He saw a car flipped over and burning on the highway. A little girl was trapped inside. Peter pulled her out seconds before the gas tank exploded. The blast threw him against a concrete barrier, shattering his spine. He saved her, but he lost his legs. He hid the truth because the doctors said he'd never walk again, and he didn't want to be a burden to you."

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked at Peter, who was staring at the floor, tears finally escaping his eyes. The sacrifice he had made, and the pain he had carried alone, shattered my heart.
