The dry desert heat of Nevada pressed down like a physical weight, but Megan barely felt it. Clad in a faded dark blue sweater that had once belonged to her father, she stood before the wooden platform of the exclusive High Desert Firing Line. Her fingers, steady and cool despite the rising temperature, rested on the latches of her heavy rifle case.

Behind her stood Steve, the range’s arrogant owner, dressed in his crisp grey tactical shirt, cap, and dark sunglasses. To Steve, she was just another amateur trying to play with the big boys—a perfect opportunity to show off for the wealthy clients gathered under the shaded canopy.

The Challenge

Steve smirked, crossing his arms.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line,"

he said, his voice dripping with condescension.

Megan didn't reply. She popped the latches and lifted the heavy, vintage bolt-action rifle. It was a beautiful piece of machinery, worn but meticulously maintained. Steve’s eyes flickered with a brief moment of recognition, but he quickly masked it with a sneer.

"Careful, that rifle kicks harder than it looks,"

Steve warned, stepping back to let his clients get a good view of the impending failure.

"Right in the center, if you can find it."

Megan ignored him. She chambered a round, the heavy metallic slide sounding like a death knell in the quiet desert. She raised the weapon, aligned the iron sights, and squeezed.

The deafening roar of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls. Downrange, five hundred yards away, the heavy steel target spun violently. Steve’s jaw dropped. He took off his sunglasses, squinting into the glare.

"Did she hit both?"

he muttered to his range master. Megan calmly cycled the bolt, the hot brass casing bouncing off the dust.

"You gave me seven shots,"

she said, her voice ice-cold as she prepared for the next.
