The desert heat was suffocating, a thick blanket of dust and tension that hung heavy over the canyon. Captain Ashley knelt in the loose gravel, her fingers wrapped around the cold steel of her sniper rifle. For months, she had endured the quiet scoffs and overt disrespect of her commanding officer. Today was no different.

Behind her stood General William, his grey hair stark against the drab military gear, his face twisted into a familiar, mocking grin. He looked down at her as if she were a child playing with toys.

The Skeptical Commander

"What are you going to do, Captain, throw a clipboard at it?"

William sneered, gesturing mockingly to the other soldiers standing nearby. A few of them shifted uncomfortably, while others let out quiet, nervous chuckles. They all knew Ashley’s legendary reputation on the range, but nobody dared cross the General.

Ashley didn't let her focus waver. Through her scope, she had spotted a dangerous anomaly on the distant ridge—a scout preparing to signal an ambush. She kept her breathing slow and measured, ignoring the sweat stinging her eyes.

"Request permission to take a lane,"

she said, her voice steady and calm, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her flustered.

William sighed, crossing his arms with an expression of deep annoyance. He looked down at her with pure condescension.

"One round, Captain. Don't embarrass me,"

he warned, his voice dripping with arrogance.

Ashley adjusted her turret, calculating the wind speed and the rising heat distortion. She knew she only had one chance to prove her worth and, more importantly, to keep her platoon safe. She exhaled, squeezing the trigger with absolute precision.
