The Ballroom Humiliation

The chandelier-lit ballroom of the Thorne estate hummed with the quiet chatter of the city's elite. Audrey stood near the edge of the grand room, her fingers nervously tracing the hem of her simple white silk blouse. She didn't belong in this world of superficial wealth anymore. Three years ago, she had been Thomas Thorne's fiancée. But after she disappeared on what Thomas believed was a "frivolous backpacking trip"—which was actually a highly classified military deployment—everything changed. When she returned broken and scarred, Thomas had quickly discarded her for Catherine, a wealthy heiress who fit his polished image.

"Well, look what the cat dragged in," a sharp, mocking voice sneered.

Audrey turned to find Catherine standing before her, clad in a glittering bronze sequined gown. Thomas stood just behind her, holding a champagne flute, his eyes cold and dismissive.

"I told you not to show your face here, Audrey," Thomas muttered, loud enough for nearby guests to hear. "You don't fit in anymore."

"I am only here to represent the veterans' charity, Thomas," Audrey replied quietly, keeping her composure.

But Catherine was looking for a scene. "A charity case representing charity? How fitting," she laughed. Before Audrey could step away, Catherine reached out with shocking malice. With a violent wrench of her hands, she ripped open the back of Audrey's white blouse.A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Exposed to the harsh light were massive, deeply stitched cross scars running down Audrey's back.

"Look at her!" Catherine shouted, pointing mockingly. "She's nothing but scars! She's a monster!"

Audrey froze, tears of humiliation welling in her eyes as the crowd whispered in disgust.

"Security, get her out of here!" Thomas commanded, eager to end the embarrassment.

But before anyone could move, the grand double doors burst open. Admiral Vance, the nation's most decorated military commander, marched in. He ignored the wealthy socialites, walked straight to Audrey, and saluted.

"Captain Sterling, welcome home," he said clearly.

With a violent wrench of her hands, she ripped open the back of Audrey's white blouse.
