Previously: When General Robert mocked Captain Emily's abilities in front of her entire unit, he expected her to fail. Instead, her single shot exposed a massive conspiracy that changed their lives forever.

The Hidden Threat

Through the high-powered lens of her scope, Emily scanned the rocky ridge just below the target marker. The thermal imaging overlay flickered, revealing a heat signature that shouldn't have been there. It wasn't wild game, and it wasn't a trick of the light. Crouched in a deep defile were four armed hostiles, silently setting up a heavy mortar system aimed directly at their command post. Worse, a blinking black box sat on a nearby rock—a military-grade GPS transponder broadcasting their exact location.

Emily’s mind raced. The coordinates of this observation post were classified under the highest level of security. Only three people in the entire division had access to them. One of them was General Robert, and the other was his highly trusted chief of staff, Major Thomas, who was currently standing just feet behind her.

If she fired at the orange target marker to satisfy the General's petty test, the hostile mortar team would immediately hear the supersonic crack of her bullet and launch their payload, wiping out the entire command group. If she shifted her aim to neutralize the threat, she would be disobeying a direct order on a live range.

"Captain, you're losing your wind window," Robert barked, his patience wearing thin. "Take the shot or step aside."

Emily adjusted her elevation turret by three clicks, shifting her crosshairs away from the orange flag and directly onto the fuel tank of the hostile generator powering the transponder.

"Sir, we have active hostiles at nine o'clock, preparing to fire," Emily reported calmly, her finger tightening on the trigger.

Major Thomas stepped forward, his face suddenly pale. "She's lying, General! She's trying to distract from her own failure. Order her to stand down!"

But Emily didn't wait for the order. She squeezed the trigger, and the rifle roared, sending a single, devastating round screaming across the canyon.
