The nursery was supposed to be a sanctuary of peace, bathed in the soft, warm glow of afternoon light reflecting off the pastel yellow wallpaper. Chloe stood over the white wooden crib, gently humming a lullaby as she smoothed the blanket over her newborn son, Liam. For the first time in months, she felt a fleeting moment of safety. But that safety was shattered the moment the nursery door was flung open with violent force.

Martha stood in the doorway, her face contorted with a venomous rage. Without a single word of explanation, she marched across the room, her grey zip-up hoodie rustling. Before Chloe could even react, Martha lunged over the crib. Her fingers clamped into Chloe's hair, yanking her head back with agonizing force.

Chloe gasped in pain, tears instantly flooding her eyes as she clawed at her mother-in-law's wrists. The infant, startled by the sudden violence, began to wail hysterically. Martha leaned in, her eyes wild, and screamed directly into Chloe's face:

"You're going to pay for this! You think you can trick my family?"

Just then, the front door slammed, and hurried footsteps approached. Tyler, wearing his blue plaid shirt, froze at the entrance of the nursery. His face drained of color, frozen in absolute disbelief. Seeing his mother violently assaulting his wife over their crying baby's crib triggered something primal inside him.

With a roar of anger, Tyler lunged forward. He tore Martha away from Chloe, placing his own body as a protective shield in front of his trembling wife. His chest heaved as he pointed a trembling, furious finger at the door, his voice echoing off the yellow walls.

"Get out of here! Get out!"

Martha stumbled backward, gasping for air, but her eyes remained fixed on Chloe with a chilling, triumphant malice.
