Previously: At her dream outdoor wedding, Chloe hands her future mother-in-law a shocking note that uncovers a decade of dark family secrets, lies, and a husband thought to be long dead.

The Unraveling of a Perfect Lie

Eleanor’s hand shook so violently that the white card slipped from her fingers, fluttering onto the grass. She lunged forward, grabbing my wrist with a desperate, painful grip. "Where did you get this?" she hissed, her voice a low, venomous whisper. "This is a sick joke. Arthur is dead. He died in the cabin fire!"

"He survived, Eleanor," I whispered back, pulling my wrist from her grasp. "But you already knew that, didn't you? You're the one who has been paying the private care facility to keep him heavily sedated and hidden under a false name for ten years. All so you could claim his inheritance and control Marcus."

Just then, Marcus walked over, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Is everything okay here? Mom, you look like you've seen a ghost."

Eleanor tried to force a laugh, but it came out as a strangled gasp. "Of course, darling! Just... wedding jitters. Chloe and I were just having a moment."

But it was too late. The iron gates of the garden opened, and a sleek black sedan pulled up. Two men in uniform stepped out, followed by a nurse pushing a wheelchair. Inside the wheelchair sat an older man with silver hair and familiar blue eyes. He wore a simple suit, and though his face bore the faint scars of an old fire, his gaze was sharp and clear.

Marcus froze. He stared at the man in the wheelchair, his breath catching in his throat. "Dad?" he whispered, his voice cracking. He looked at his mother, whose face was now completely white. "Mom, what is going on? You told me he died!"

Eleanor fell to her knees on the grass, sobbing frantically. "Marcus, please, I did it for us! I did it to protect our future!" The guests began to whisper, their eyes darting between the weeping matriarch and the man she had declared dead a decade ago.
