Previously: When Natalie wore her military dress uniform to her brother-in-law's wedding, her mother-in-law Theresa tried to humiliate her. She had no idea a sudden announcement would change everything.

The Tables Turn

The sudden, commanding shout sent a shiver through the crowd. Theresa spun around, her elegant hat tilting precariously as her eyes widened in disbelief. Walking down the aisle with absolute authority was General Arthur Vance, a legendary military figure whose influence stretched far beyond the armed forces into the highest echelons of state politics. Theresa had spent the last six months trying to secure a meeting with him to save her family's struggling logistics empire.

But General Vance didn't even glance at Theresa. He marched directly toward Natalie, stopping two feet away, and brought his hand up in a crisp, respectful salute. The cathedral fell into a dead, stunned silence.

"Major Mercer," the General announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the vast church. "I apologize for the intrusion, but the Pentagon has officially approved your promotion. I wanted to personally congratulate our newest Lieutenant Colonel."

A collective murmur washed over the guests. Theresa looked as though she had been struck by lightning. She had spent years telling her social circle that Natalie was a low-ranking clerk who only joined the military because she had no other options. Now, the truth was laid bare before everyone who mattered to her.

Theresa tried to recover, a desperate, sycophantic smile stretching across her face. "General Vance! What an absolute honor," she gushed, stepping forward and pushing her son, David, ahead. "We had no idea you were coming. Natalie, darling, why didn't you tell us you were hosting such distinguished guests?"

General Vance turned a cold, piercing gaze onto Theresa. "I am not here as a guest, ma'am," he said flatly. "I am here because Major Mercer is the lead officer auditing your family's federal shipping contracts. And after what I just witnessed, I have serious doubts about your family's integrity."
