Previously: When Sergeant Cody returned from deployment, his mother crashed the welcome-home dinner with a shocking DNA test. But the secret behind the baby's parentage would shatter her world instead.

The Truth That Heals

Heather stood up, her voice steady despite the tears in her eyes.

"Tell her, Cody,"
she said softly.
"Or I will."
Evelyn laughed mockingly, but Cody raised his hand, silencing his mother. His shoulders slumped, and he let out a long, ragged breath. He looked at the DNA test, then tossed it into the trash can.

"Mom, leave,"
Cody said quietly. Evelyn gasped.
"Cody! She betrayed you! Are you blind?"
Cody shook his head, looking his mother in the eye.
"Heather didn't betray me. We used a fertility clinic and an anonymous donor. Two years ago, before my last deployment, I was injured in combat. The shrapnel damage... it left me sterile. We kept it private because it was painful for me to talk about, and I knew you would judge us."

Evelyn’s face turned pale. Her triumphant smile vanished, replaced by utter shock.

"You... sterile? But why didn't you tell me?"
she stammered. Cody stepped closer to Heather, wrapping his arm tightly around her waist.
"Because of exactly this,"
Cody replied, his voice firm.
"You wanted to find a way to destroy my marriage, but instead, you've only shown how toxic you really are. Leo is my son. I was there when we chose the donor, I was there on the phone when he was born, and I am the one who will raise him. Now, get out of our house."

Realizing she had completely destroyed her relationship with her son, Evelyn gathered her coat and fled into the night, leaving a heavy silence behind. Cody turned back to his family, picked up little Leo, and held him close, kissing his forehead. Heather joined the embrace, knowing that their love was stronger than any biological bond. True fatherhood isn't defined by blood, but by the love, sacrifice, and devotion a man gives to his family every single day.
