The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by Lily’s soft whimpers. In the doorway of the kitchen, Ronan’s eight-year-old nephew, Leo, and seven-year-old niece, Maya, stood frozen. They had been playing quietly, but the screaming had drawn them out. Their faces were pale, their eyes wide with fear as they looked at their grandmother, Martha.

Ronan stood up slowly, keeping Lily behind him. He looked at the cut on Lily's head. It was too deep, too jagged to have been caused by a pair of hair clippers. It looked like an impact wound.

"How did she get that cut, Martha?" Ronan demanded, his voice dangerously low. "Tell me the truth, or I will call the police right now."

Martha sneered, her face twisting with a bitter resentment she had harbored for years. "She tripped, Ronan. She's a clumsy child, just like her mother was. I was trying to clean the wound, and her hair was in the way."

Before Ronan could respond, Leo took a trembling step forward. He looked terrified, but he spoke with brave clarity.

"That's not what happened, Uncle Ronan," Leo whispered. "Aunt Martha was angry because Lily didn't want to look at old photos. She pushed Lily. Lily fell and hit her head on the stone fireplace. There was so much blood."

Maya nodded tearfully, confirming her brother's words. Ronan felt a wave of cold fury wash over him. Martha hadn't shaved Lily's head out of a bizarre whim. She had shaved it to hide the blood, the swelling, and the evidence of her physical abuse, planning to blame it on a clumsy haircutting accident.

Realizing she was caught, Martha’s calm facade completely shattered. She lunged forward, trying to snatch Ronan’s phone from his hand as he unlocked it. "You call the police, and I'll tell them you did it!" she shrieked, her voice manic. "I'll tell Child Services you abuse her! I have more money and influence than you ever will, Ronan.
