My Mother-in-Law Shaved My Daughter's Head, But Her Real Motive Broke My Heart
Previously: When Ronan returned home to find his eight-year-old daughter sobbing on the floor with a partially shaved head, he thought it was a cruel punishment. The truth was far worse.
The anger inside Ronan burned hotter than anything he had ever felt. He stood up, keeping Lily safely behind his back, shielding her from the cold gaze of the woman who was supposed to protect her.
'Get out of my house,' Ronan said, his voice dangerously low. 'Pack your bags and get out before I call the police.'
Martha let out a sharp, mocking laugh that sent chills down his spine. She didn't look intimidated at all. Instead, she reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished brass key. Ronan felt his stomach drop. He recognized that key instantly—it belonged to the locked cedar chest in the attic that had belonged to his late wife, Sarah.

The Secret in the Attic
'You think you can throw me out, Ronan?' Martha sneered, tossing the key onto the coffee table. 'You should be thanking me. Your precious daughter decided to play detective today. She went into the attic, unlocked Sarah's chest, and stole something she was never meant to see.'
Ronan looked down at Lily. The little girl was trembling, clutching the hem of his shirt.
'Daddy, I'm sorry,' Lily whispered through her tears. 'I found the letters. The letters Mommy wrote before she went to the hospital. Grandma saw me reading them and got mad. She said if I told you, she would take me away.'
Ronan’s mind raced. Sarah had left letters? Why had Martha kept them hidden for two years?
'What letters, Martha?' Ronan demanded, stepping closer. 'Why would you assault my daughter over letters?'
Martha’s eyes gleamed with a twisted sense of triumph. She pulled a thick, yellowed envelope from her pocket, holding it just out of his reach.
'Because these letters contain a truth that would destroy your little world, Ronan,' Martha whispered venomously. 'They prove that Lily isn't who you think she is. If you make me leave, I will burn them, and you will never know the secret Sarah took to her grave.'
