Previously: When Liam walked away from his family ten years ago to pursue wealth, he never expected to find his mother cooking on a cold city street—holding a secret that would shatter him.

Secrets in the Steam

Before Liam could step forward to embrace his mother, a shadow fell over them. A tall, rugged man in his late twenties wearing a worn leather jacket stepped between them, his posture defensive and hostile. He placed a protective hand on Martha’s shoulder, glaring at Liam with deep-seated resentment.

"Hey! Get away from her!" the stranger barked, his voice drawing glances from passing pedestrians. He looked at Liam’s expensive clothes and sneered. "I told your father’s lawyers to leave us alone. She doesn't owe that estate another single dime."

Liam stumbled back, utterly bewildered. "Who are you?" he demanded. "And what do you mean she owes my father's estate? I’m her son, Liam."

The stranger let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "I know exactly who you are, Liam. The Golden Boy who chose a trust fund over his own blood. I’m Marcus. Your brother."

The revelation hit Liam like a physical blow. He stared at Martha, whose face had gone deathly pale. "Brother? That’s impossible. I’m an only child," Liam stammered, his mind racing.

"He doesn't know, Marcus,"
Martha pleaded, her voice trembling as she clutched Marcus’s sleeve.
"Please, don't do this here. Let it go."

"No, Mother! He needs to know the truth!" Marcus snapped. He turned his fierce gaze back to Liam. "Our father had a whole secret life. When Mom found out, he threatened to ruin you and her both if she ever spoke up. He forced her into a brutal non-disclosure agreement and sued her into bankruptcy using fake debts just to keep her quiet about me. She sacrificed her entire life, living in poverty and working this cart, just to pay off the legal fees and protect you from his wrath."

Liam felt the world tilt beneath his feet. The wealth he had inherited wasn't just blood money; it was the instrument of his mother’s torture, built on a mountain of lies that had kept him separated from a brother he never knew existed.
