Previously: When Jessica confronts her decorated naval commander father on a stormy tarmac for betraying her husband's unit, a shocking ambush reveals a truth she never saw coming.

The Shadow of Deception

Out of the gloomy mist surrounding the runway, five unmarked, heavily armed mercenary soldiers emerged, their rifles trained directly on Jessica and Thomas. They wore tactical gear devoid of any insignia, their faces concealed behind dark balaclavas. Jessica kept her weapon raised, her eyes darting between the new threat and her father, who was slowly rising from the wet concrete.

The leader of the mercenaries stepped forward, a cold, mocking laugh escaping his lips. He looked at Thomas, ignoring Jessica entirely.

"You should have stayed retired, Commander," the leader sneered. "We told you what would happen if you tried to negotiate outside the parameters."

Jessica's mind raced. She looked at her father, confusion temporarily replacing her anger.

"What is he talking about?" Jessica demanded, her gun still raised. "What parameters?"

Thomas stepped in front of his daughter, using his own body to shield her from the mercenaries' sights. The cold, authoritative Commander was gone; in his place stood a desperate father. He looked back at her, his eyes filled with a pain she had never seen before.

"They have David, Jessica," Thomas whispered, his voice shaking. "They didn't kill his unit. They captured them. The contractor blackmailed me. They told me if I sent the rescue team, they would execute David and the rest of his men on live television."

The truth hit Jessica like a physical blow. Her father hadn't abandoned David out of greed or corruption. He had stayed the rescue mission to keep David alive, playing a dangerous game of chess with a powerful, shadow defense contractor to buy time for a covert extraction.

"And now," the mercenary leader interrupted, raising his rifle, "the game is over. The Commander tried to double-cross us, and you, Lieutenant, have seen too much. Orders are orders. No witnesses."

Jessica braced herself, knowing they were completely outgunned. She gripped her pistol, ready to fight to her last breath beside the father she had just misjudged. The mercenary's finger began to squeeze the trigger.
