My Commander Ordered Me to Stand Down, but the Truth on the Tarmac Changed Everything
Previously: Confronting her commander on a rainy airfield, Lauren thought she was stopping a traitor. But his shocking final words revealed a conspiracy far deeper than she ever imagined.
The Shadow Conspiracy
Arthur slowly raised his hands again, but his voice was remarkably calm as he spoke. "The extraction coordinates were leaked hours before you even took off, Lauren. If I had sent the backup forces, they would have been flying directly into a surface-to-air missile trap. I didn't abandon your squad to save myself. I ordered the stand-down to prevent the entire rescue fleet from being annihilated."
Lauren lowered her weapon slightly, her mind racing. "But my men... Leo and Miller are still out there! They were captured!"

"They were captured because Admiral Higgins wanted hostages to draw you out," Arthur revealed, his voice laced with venom. "Higgins is the one selling intelligence to the cartel. He needed your squad gone to cover his tracks. Now that you've survived, he can't let you speak."
Before Lauren could process the devastating betrayal, the screech of tires erupted from the eastern edge of the airfield. Three unmarked black SUVs breached the secure perimeter, tearing across the tarmac toward them. Armed men wearing tactical gear and civilian masks began spilling out of the vehicles, raising automatic weapons.
Arthur reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, ruggedized USB drive, shoving it forcefully into a webbing loop on Lauren's plate carrier. "This contains the encrypted communication logs between Higgins and the cartel. It’s the only proof of your innocence—and their treason."
The mercenary team was advancing rapidly, their red laser sights dancing across the wet concrete and onto Lauren's chest.
"They're here to eliminate both of us," Arthur whispered urgently, grabbing Lauren's gun hand and pressing the barrel of her pistol against his own shoulder. "You have to shoot me. Make it look like you took me hostage to escape. If you don't, they will kill us both right here. Shoot me, Lauren! Run!"
Staring into the eyes of the man who had been a second father to her, Lauren faced an impossible dilemma. Pulling the trigger on an innocent man went against everything she stood for, but staying meant letting the true traitors win.
