The grand lobby of the Sterling mansion was usually a place of quiet elegance, but today, its high curved oak staircase echoed with the harsh sounds of a family tearing itself apart. Mary stood trembling near the bottom steps, her hand instinctively resting on her six-month pregnant belly. Her face burned from the sharp slap she had just received from her mother-in-law, Martha. A thin line of red was starting to bead on her cheek where Martha’s heavy diamond ring had scraped her skin.

Before Mary could even process the physical pain, the heavy front doors opened and her husband, James, walked in. Instead of rushing to his pregnant wife's side, James looked at his mother, then glared at Mary with eyes full of cold fury. He didn't care about the mark on her face. He only cared about his family's pride.
