As the paramedics rushed Lily into the back of the ambulance, Sarah prepared to climb in with her. But Officer Miller put a firm hand on David’s shoulder, stopping him from following. Sarah turned, confused and frantic.

"Officer, we need to go to the hospital! Why are you stopping him?"

she cried. Officer Miller didn't look at Sarah; his stern gaze remained locked on David.

"Mr. Vance, we received a call from your neighbor across the street,"

Officer Miller said, his voice cold.

"He was reviewing his security camera footage from earlier this afternoon. It shows you carrying your sleeping daughter out of the house, walking down the driveway, and putting her into that recycling bin."

The world seemed to spin out of control. Sarah stared at her husband, waiting for him to laugh, to deny it, to say it was a horrific mistake. But David’s face went entirely blank. He didn't deny it. Instead, he slowly dropped his head into his hands and began to weep.

"I didn't have a choice, Sarah,"

he whispered, his voice trembling.

"They were going to take her anyway."

Sarah felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She stepped back from the man she had loved for seven years.

"What are you talking about, David? What did you do?"

she screamed, the tears hot on her face. David confessed that he had fallen deep into debt with some dangerous people after a series of failed business investments. He had been receiving threats for weeks. That afternoon, he received a text message saying they were coming to take his daughter to settle the debt. Panic-stricken and desperate to hide her, he had placed Lily in the secure recycling bin, planning to retrieve her once the threat had passed, unaware that the air supply would quickly deplete.
