Before Sarah could even draw breath to explain, David stepped in front of her, shielding her from the officer’s gaze. His face was twisted in a look of profound, performative sorrow.
"Officer, it’s my wife,"David said, his voice trembling.
"Sarah has been struggling terribly with severe depression and sleepwalking. She takes heavy sedatives. I found her wandering the halls last night. I think... I think she put Lily there during an episode and forgot."
Sarah stared at her husband, her mind reeling in absolute disbelief. How could he say this? She had never sleepwalked in her life, and she didn't take any sleeping medication.
"That is a lie!"she shrieked, clutching Lily closer as the paramedics gently took the little girl from her arms to administer oxygen.
"I've never sleepwalked! David, why are you doing this?"
Officer Miller frowned, looking back and forth between the hysterical mother and the calm, rational husband.
"Ma'am, please calm down,"Miller said, his tone guarded.
"We need to investigate this thoroughly. If there is medication in the house, we will find it."
David sighed, rubbing his temples.
"It's in the master bathroom, Officer. I just want my stepdaughter to be safe. Sarah needs help."
In that terrifying second, Sarah realized David's ultimate plan. He had been trying to alienate her from her family, and now he wanted her declared an unfit mother to secure their assets and get custody of the estate. But David had forgotten one crucial detail. Two days prior, suspicious of David's late-night phone calls, Sarah had installed a hidden security camera disguised as a birdhouse on the front porch.
With trembling fingers, Sarah pulled her phone from her pocket and opened the security app. David noticed the motion. His eyes widened in sudden, stark terror. He lunged forward to grab the device, but Officer Miller stepped firmly between them, holding David back.
