Previously: After ten years of exile to protect her daughter, a terminally ill mother returns home—only to be met with a chilling threat from her deceptive son-in-law.

A Venomous Welcome

The moment Ryan wrapped his arms around both women, the warmth of the afternoon vanished. As his face pressed against Margaret’s shoulder, his grip tightened into a painful squeeze. He leaned in, his lips brushing her ear, and whispered a venomous threat.

"If you say one word about the past, Margaret, I will destroy her. I still have those forged documents, and she will spend the rest of her life behind bars. Play nice, or your last days will be her worst."

He pulled back with a charming grin, leaving Margaret shivering in the heat. Jessica, wiping tears of joy from her cheeks, was completely oblivious. She eagerly excused herself to fetch some cold lemonade from the kitchen, leaving the two of them alone on the driveway.

The instant the front door clicked shut, Ryan’s smile evaporated. His face contorted into a sneer as he stepped closer, towering over the frail elderly woman.

"You thought you could just crawl back here and play the victim?" Ryan hissed, his fingers digging painfully into her arm. "You have twenty-four hours to make an excuse and leave, or I call the police on Jessica myself. I'll tell them she was the mastermind behind the embezzlement ten years ago."

Margaret looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears, but her voice was steady. "You are a monster, Ryan. You stole from my husband's company, framed my daughter, and forced me into exile. Haven't you taken enough?"

Ryan laughed, a cold, dry sound. "I took what was mine. And I'll take the rest if you don't get out of our lives."

He noticed the slight bulge in Margaret's handbag. With a sudden, violent movement, he snatched the bag from her hands and zipped it open. Inside, her smartphone was active, a recording app spinning.

With a smirk of triumph, Ryan threw the phone onto the concrete driveway and stomped on it with his heavy boot, crushing it into a web of shattered glass and metal.

"Nice try, old woman," he sneered. "But you've always been one step behind."
