Previously: After serving five years to protect her daughter, Martha returns home to a beautiful welcome banner—only to discover a dark family secret that threatens her freedom once again.

The Ultimate Truth

That night, locked in the small guest room, Martha plugged the USB drive into an old laptop Andrew had left on the desk. Her breath caught as a video file opened. It was a security recording from Chloe’s home office. On the screen, Chloe was speaking to her financial advisor, laughing openly about how she had embezzled the money and successfully pinned it on her "gullible" mother. "She'd do anything for me," Chloe sneered on the tape. "And now, once she signs the power of attorney, her remaining trust fund is entirely mine."

Martha stared at the screen, her heart breaking, but the tears stopped. In their place, a cold, fierce resolve took over. She had spent five years paying for her daughter's sins, but she would not spend the rest of her life in a cage of Chloe's making.

The next morning, Chloe entered the room with a smug smile, accompanied by a mobile notary.

"Time to sign, Mom. Let's make this easy,"
she said smoothly.

Martha didn't reach for the pen. Instead, she opened the laptop and pressed play. Chloe’s face drained of color as her own voice filled the room, boasting about her crimes and her plan to steal Martha's remaining money. The notary gasped, immediately packing up her seal.

"I can't witness this,"
the woman said quickly, rushing out of the house.

"Where did you get this?"
Chloe shrieked, turning on Martha like a cornered animal.
"Delete it! If the police see this, I'll go to jail!"

Martha stood tall, looking at her daughter not with anger, but with profound pity.

"I won't send you to jail, Chloe. I already did your time. But you are going to transfer my inheritance back to my account, and you are going to buy me an apartment of my choice. If you don't, this video goes directly to the district attorney."

Chloe fell to her knees, weeping, but Martha simply picked up her handbag and walked out the front door into the bright morning sun, finally free of the guilt that was never hers to bear.
