Previously: After her corrupt ex-husband took her daughter and ruined her reputation, Lauren had one shot to prove she was capable of fighting back—and she wasn't going to miss.

The Shadow of the Past

To the onlookers, Lauren's incredible marksmanship was an impressive display of skill. But to Lauren, it was a matter of survival. For three years, she had been locked in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband, Marcus, a powerful security mogul with deep political connections. Marcus had used his wealth and corrupt influence to frame Lauren as unstable, stripping her of custody of their eight-year-old daughter, Lily. He had vowed to destroy her life, ensuring no court would ever take her seriously.

But Lauren refused to play the victim. She knew that to beat Marcus, she had to obtain her independent investigator license, which required passing the state's most rigorous tactical certification. Chris's range was her only hope, as he was the only instructor Marcus couldn't buy.

Just as Chris picked up his clipboard to sign her passing grade, the screech of tires shattered the desert quiet. A sleek black SUV tore up the dirt road, parking directly behind the firing line. The door opened, and Marcus stepped out, flanked by two armed private security guards. A cruel, familiar smirk was plastered across his face.

"Stop right there, Chris," Marcus called out, his voice dripping with arrogance. "You can't certify this woman."

Chris frowned, stepping between Lauren and the newcomers. "She just cleared the hardest course on this range with a perfect score, Marcus. The paperwork is done."

"I don't care about her score," Marcus sneered, stepping closer. "She's a trespasser and a danger to herself. Furthermore, I own the land this range sits on. Sign those papers, and I will revoke your lease by the end of the day."

Marcus turned to his guards and gestured toward Lauren's rifle. "Take the weapon. She's done here."

Lauren clutched the rifle tightly, her knuckles turning white. She was outnumbered and outgunned, and Marcus was threatening to destroy the one place she had left to fight for her daughter.
