The Battle in the Courtroom

The mahogany-walled military courtroom was quiet, save for the low hum of the heating vents. It was late December, and the festive evergreen wreaths hanging from the gallery walls felt terribly out of place against the cold, clinical atmosphere of a tribunal. Lieutenant Commander Sarah Vance stood tall before the microphone. Her white dress uniform was immaculate, every service stripe and medal on her chest earned through sweat, sacrifice, and absolute dedication to her country. But today, those very medals were being weaponized against her.

Seated just a few feet away at the defense table was Robert Vance, her ex-husband. He wore a dark navy designer suit, his thinning light brown hair combed back neatly. Robert was a powerful defense contractor who was used to buying his way out of trouble. As Sarah stood there, preparing to face the devastating accusations of treason and espionage he had manufactured against her, Robert looked up at her and smiled. It was a smug, mocking grin that said, I have already destroyed you.

The military judge, a stern colonel with decades of service, looked over his spectacles at Sarah.

"Lieutenant Commander Vance, the evidence of unauthorized data transfer from your terminal is compelling. Do you wish to make a statement before we proceed to formal sentencing?"

The camera of public opinion had already judged her, but Sarah didn't flinch. She leaned in toward the microphone, her eyes locking onto Robert's mocking face. The smugness in his eyes was almost unbearable, but she felt no fear. Only a cold, hardened resolve.

"No,"
Sarah said, her voice steady and clear. She paused, letting the word ring through the silent wood-paneled room. Then, she continued with absolute certainty:
"I know exactly how this ends."
