Previously: When a late-night diner shift is interrupted by a frantic warning of poison, a waitress is thrust into a dangerous game of corporate espionage and deadly secrets.

The Secrets in the Rain

The interior of the black sedan smelled of expensive leather and damp coats. As the car sped away from the diner, the tires splashing through deep puddles, I stared at the brown paper bag in my lap. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. With trembling fingers, I opened the bag, expecting to find stolen cash or perhaps a weapon. Instead, my eyes widened as I pulled out a sealed silver vial containing a glowing blue liquid, alongside a thick manila folder. I flipped it open under the dim dashboard light and gasped. It was a complete dossier on my family, including a photograph of my late father.

"Marcus, what is this?" I demanded, my voice cracking. "What does Mr. Bozak want with my father's old research?"
"Your father didn't die of natural causes, Sarah," Marcus muttered, his eyes glued to the rearview mirror. "He perfected a synthetic compound that Bozak would kill to possess. And Zane is Bozak's chief enforcer. I got you out of there because Zane was going to eliminate you once he realized you had the formula."

We pulled into an abandoned shipping terminal near the docks, the skeletal structures of giant cranes looming in the darkness. Another black luxury car was already waiting, its headlights cutting through the heavy rain. The door opened, and Zane stepped out, flanked by two armed men. Marcus grabbed my arm, pulling me out of the sedan and pushing me forward. But the moment we reached Zane, Marcus's demeanor shifted. He pulled a handgun from his waistband and aimed it directly at Zane's chest.

"I have the girl, and I have the formula," Marcus growled, his voice filled with sudden greed. "But the price just went up, Zane. Tell Bozak I want double, or the girl and the vial disappear forever."

Zane didn't look surprised. He slowly raised his hands, a cold, knowing smirk spreading across his face. Before anyone could move, the blinding headlights of three more SUVs flooded the terminal, trapping us in a circle of light.
