Previously: When Nicole's wedding day was ruined by a muddy disaster, she thought it was an accident—until her fiancé's best man, Wes, revealed a dark family secret.

The Unraveling of a Lie

Wes stepped away from the marble pillar, his heavy leather boots clicking rhythmically against the pristine floor. The smirk was gone, replaced by a hard, determined expression. "Don't lie to her, Brody," Wes said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that commanded the entire room. "Tell her why the stable gate was left unlatched. Tell her why you insisted she walk by the training paddock in her wedding dress."

Brody’s face drained of color, turning as white as my ruined gown. "Stay out of this, Wes! This is family business, and you're just the hired help around here," Brody spat, his voice cracking with sudden desperation.

Wes ignored him entirely, turning his piercing blue eyes toward me. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a folded piece of heavy parchment. "Brody doesn't love you, Nicole. He loves your family's pristine reputation and the trust fund that comes with your name. He gambled away his entire inheritance on illegal offshore betting. His father refused to bail him out unless he secured a wealthy, respectable bride to restore the family's credit."

I felt the world tilt on its axis. "What are you talking about?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Brody, tell me he's lying."

Brody tried to grab my arm, but Wes stepped between us, his massive frame shielding me. He handed me the paper. "This is the real prenuptial agreement his lawyers prepared this morning. The mud was a distraction to delay the ceremony so you'd be too exhausted and emotional to read the fine print. If you sign this, you waive all rights to your own family's assets, and you agree to absolute silence regarding Brody's debts."

I opened the document, my muddy fingers leaving dark smudges on the crisp paper. There it was, in black and white. My fiancé was selling me out to save himself from ruin, and his entire family was watching it happen.
