Previously: When Nicole's groom humiliated her minutes before the ceremony, she fled into the muddy woods. But when her childhood friend Wes showed up, the real drama began in the sanctuary.

The True Legacy

Before Richard could pull Nicole away, Wes’s hand clamped down on Richard’s wrist with the iron grip of a man who worked the land for a living. "Let her go," Wes said softly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous fire. Richard looked at Wes’s hardened face, realized he was entirely outmatched, and slowly released his grip, stepping back with a scowl.

Nicole looked down at her muddy dress, then up at Wes, and finally at the crowd of guests. The fear that had paralyzed her for months suddenly vanished, replaced by an overwhelming sense of clarity. She reached behind her back, unzipped the ruined, mud-soaked wedding gown, and stepped completely out of it, revealing the simple white slip she wore underneath. She kicked off her expensive, uncomfortable heels, standing barefoot and proud on the cold marble floor.

"The wedding is off," Nicole announced, her voice echoing clearly through the sanctuary. "And Richard, you are going to leave my family's land, or my lawyers will make sure you spend the next ten years in a courtroom."

The guests erupted into applause as Richard and his groomsmen slunk out of the sanctuary in disgrace. Nicole turned to Wes, a genuine smile breaking through the dried mud on her face. "I suppose you're going to tell me 'I told you so' now?" she teased, her eyes shining with tears of relief.

Wes smiled, offering her his hand. "I’d never say that, Nicole. I’m just glad you’re finally ready to go home." Together, they walked out of the marble sanctuary and into the warm Texas sun, leaving the fake glamour behind. Nicole realized that sometimes, getting dragged through the mud is exactly what it takes to see who is truly willing to stand by your side when the storm hits.
