The Fall from Grace

The grand banquet hall of the Grand Regency was filled with the glittering elite of the city. Chandelier light reflected off crystal glasses, and the scent of expensive lilies filled the air. To anyone watching, it was the perfect wedding. I stood in my intricate lace gown, my veil cascading down my shoulders, looking at my new husband, Justin. He looked dashing in his charcoal suit, but his eyes lacked the warmth a bride hopes to see on her wedding day.

As we took our seats at the head table for the reception, disaster struck. My heel caught on the heavy silk trim of my gown. The chair slipped sideways, and with a sudden, humiliating lurch, I crashed to the polished hardwood floor.

The music seemed to stop. A suffocating silence fell over the room, followed quickly by the cruel, muffled laughter of the guests. I looked up, bruised and embarrassed, expecting Justin to rush to my side. Instead, he sat back, a mocking smirk on his face.

"Wow, too slow," Justin chuckled, swirling his champagne.

My heart plummeted. Before I could even process his cruelty, his mother, Sylvia, stepped forward. Clad in an elegant beaded lace dress, she looked down at me with pure disdain, her wine glass held high.

"What a shame," Sylvia sneered, her voice carrying across the quiet hall. "She doesn't even know how to sit properly. I told you she lacked breeding, Justin."

Tears stung my eyes, but as I sat on the cold floor, something inside me snapped. The sadness turned into a cold, hard resolve. I wiped my face, slowly stood up, and looked at the man I had just sworn to love forever. With steady fingers, I slid the massive diamond ring off my finger and dropped it onto the white tablecloth with a heavy clink.

Just then, the grand double doors of the hall swung open. Jonathan, my family’s trusted attorney, walked in wearing a tailored navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

"My lawyer is already here," I whispered, looking directly into Justin's suddenly pale face.
