My Husband Passed Away Two Years Ago—But Today a Shadow Appeared on My Porch
The Shadow Beyond the Glass
The afternoon sun filtered through the patterned curtains of the cluttered living room, casting a warm, golden glow over the shelves of ceramic teapots. It was a picture of domestic peace, yet a heavy, invisible weight always hung in the air. For two years, Sarah had done her best to keep the house warm and filled with life for her three-year-old daughter, Lily. But the silence left behind by her husband David, who had been declared dead in action, was a void she could never truly fill.
Sarah sat in her favorite armchair, wearing a simple grey long-sleeve tee, watching Lily play. The little girl, dressed in a bright pink dress with her light brown pigtails bouncing, was happily building a tower of colorful blocks on the rug. It was a beautiful, ordinary moment, until the air in the room suddenly felt ice-cold.

A dark, tall shadow fell across the glass doors leading to the backyard. Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. The figure was standing perfectly still, partially obscured by the glare of the sun, but unmistakably watching them.
"Look over there, Lily,"
Sarah whispered, her voice trembling as she raised a shaking hand to point toward the glass.
Lily paused, her blocks tumbling to the floor. She turned her head, her innocent eyes reflecting the bright outdoor light as she tried to make sense of her mother's fear.
"Is someone there, Mommy?"
the little girl asked softly, stepping closer to the rug's edge.
Before Sarah could answer, the figure vanished into the shadows of the nearby woods. Heart pounding, Sarah scooped Lily into her arms and rushed to lock the door. When she looked down at the welcome mat outside, her heart stopped. Resting on the weathered wood was a tarnished silver locket. Trembling, Sarah opened the door just enough to grab it. Inside was a photo of her and David, along with a hastily scribbled note in her husband's unmistakable handwriting: "I'm alive. Don't trust Jackson."
