The dining room of the Harrington estate was usually a place of refined elegance, but tonight, the air was thick with unspoken dread. The crystal chandelier hummed softly overhead, casting a dim, amber glow over the mahogany dining table where our guests sat in stiff, uncomfortable silence. I could feel Arthur’s eyes burning into me from across the room. For months, I had sensed the lies building up around us, but it wasn't until tonight that I finally found the proof. Tucked inside the pocket of my beige knit sweater was the gold pocket watch—the ultimate evidence of Arthur’s betrayal.

When I confronted him in the corner of the room, away from the whispering guests, his reaction was instantaneous and violent.

"Give it back, Sarah. You have no idea what you're playing with," he hissed.

Before I could scream, his hand lashed out. The force of his panic sent me crashing backward onto the hard floor. The impact was deafening. My favorite crystal wine glass shattered beside me, scattering glittering shards across the dark wood. As I gasped for air, the gold pocket watch slipped from my fingers, sliding across the mahogany floorboards, its rhythmic ticking sounding like a countdown.

Then, the world outside seemed to stop. Through the large arched glass windows behind the shocked dinner guests, bright car headlights pierced through the thick, foggy night. The glare illuminated the rising dust in the room. Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the mansion swung open with a violent creak.

A tall man stepped out of the freezing mist and into the warmth of the estate. It was Victor, Arthur's estranged brother, clad in a heavy charcoal wool overcoat and black leather gloves. He didn't say a word. He walked slowly past the trembling guests, his gaze fixed entirely on me. Kneeling beside my fallen form, he reached down and picked up the ticking pocket watch, his eyes cold, intense, and utterly fearless.
