My Instructor Mocked My Father’s Name, So I Revealed My True Identity
The Firing Line Challenge
The desert heat was oppressive, rising in shimmering waves off the cracked earth of the Blackwood Shooting Club. Under the rough-hewn wooden shelter, the air was slightly cooler, but the atmosphere was thick with tension. Amber stood quietly by the wooden shooting bench, her blonde hair tied back, wearing a simple, oversized dark grey zip-up hoodie that masked her athletic frame. To anyone watching, she looked like an amateur who had wandered onto the wrong range.
Jeff, the chief instructor, stood with his arms crossed over his chest. Clad in expensive tan tactical apparel, a branded cap, and dark sunglasses, he exuded the effortless arrogance of a man who owned the place. He looked at Amber’s dusty, worn rifle case with a smirk. He didn't believe she belonged there. In fact, he wanted her gone before the VIP guests arrived.

"Seven shots," Jeff challenged, his voice dripping with condescension. "Show us you belong on this firing line, or pack up your toys and go home."
Amber didn't blink. She opened the case, revealing a beautifully maintained bolt-action rifle. Its dark wood gleamed under the desert sun. She lifted the heavy weapon with practiced ease, her movements fluid and precise. Jeff’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered, leaning in to whisper a final warning.
"Careful, girl. That rifle kicks harder than it looks. Try to hit right in the center, if you can even find it through the scope."
Amber ignored him. She raised the rifle, pressing it firmly into her shoulder. She exhaled slowly, the world fading away until there was only the crosshairs and the distant spinning metal targets. She pulled the trigger. The deafening roar of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls. Downrange, a distinct, metallic clang rang out. Jeff gasped, lowering his binoculars in disbelief. "Did she... did she hit both?" he stammered. Amber calmly cycled the bolt, ejecting the spent casing. "You gave me seven shots," she replied coldly, aiming once more.
”she replied coldly, aiming once more.
