The Challenge in the Desert

The desert sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty outdoor range of the Blackwood Tactical Academy. Rachel adjusted her charcoal hoodie, keeping her eyes fixed on the heavy wooden table in front of her. She could feel the weight of a dozen critical stares burning into her back. For months, she had been the target of whispers and rumors, framed for a security breach she didn't commit, all orchestrated by her power-hungry uncle Marcus to secure his own son's inheritance of the family legacy.

Standing beside her was Ben, the lead instructor, clad in khaki tactical gear, a cap, and dark sunglasses. He looked at Rachel with a mixture of skepticism and pity. He had been instructed to make her fail, to ensure she never set foot on academy grounds again.

"Seven shots, Rachel," Ben said, his voice echoing under the rustic wooden pavilion. "Show us you belong on this firing line."

Rachel didn't answer. She opened her heavy protective case and lifted her father’s bolt-action rifle. It was a classic, heavy-barreled weapon, built for precision but notorious for its brutal recoil. Seeing the weapon, Ben smirked.

"Careful," Ben warned, crossing his arms. "That rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

A few of the spectators chuckled, but Rachel remained unfazed. She took a deep breath, aligning the buttstock against her shoulder. She exhaled slowly, letting the desert wind fade into the background. She squeezed the trigger.

The deafening crack of the rifle shattered the silence. Downrange, a heavy metal spinning target clanged violently. But it wasn't just one hit. The high-caliber bullet had zipped straight through the center of the first target and struck a smaller, hidden target directly behind it.

Ben froze. He quickly raised his binoculars, his jaw dropping as he stared at the impact points. "Did she hit both?" he muttered, completely stunned.

Rachel calmly cycled the heavy bolt, the warm brass casing clinking against the wooden table. She didn't look at him as she prepared her next round.

"You gave me seven shots," she replied coldly.

Before anyone could speak, she fired again. The second shot struck dead center, followed instantly by a third and a fourth, leaving the crowd in absolute awe.
